When installing Java Web Start Application on Microsoft Windows, Mac, Solaris and Linux, the installation will register file extension JNLP and MIME type files with the system so that Java Web Start will be launched from the web browsers (IE, Firefox, Netscape, Safari, etc) when a link to a JNLP file in the File Manager is activated or clicked.

Yes, JNLP (Java Network Launching Protocol) is a necessary file that is used by the Java run time environment to launch and manage Java Web Start applications on the Web or as standalone applications over a network (if that option is enabled in the file extension JNLP). By using this Java Web Start technology, the JNLP enables us to deploy java applications easily with a single click of mouse. The JNLP that is formatted in readable XML will open the client’s Java Web Start Application Manage, download a copy of the application onto the user’s computer (if the client does not have the latest version), and execute it as a normal Java application.

However, there have been a number of issues that make your computer system fails to execute this JNLP file. It might be a registry error on your computer system (like in Windows) or a corrupted file extension JNLP. To solve this problem, you can run a free registry scan, reinstall or upgrade Java Web Start application, or run a file recovery to repair corrupted Java Web Start application descriptor data files.
