Find out more about
File extension DOT most commonly known as a Microsoft Word (Word 97-2003) template document file. This pre-formatted text document file is used for creating multiple documents with similar formatting, such as business memos, envelopes, report, etc. It means that when you save a word document as a DOT file, all present values you made on page format (such as margins, column, font style, header footer, etc) will be stored and set as default settings whenever you open Microsoft Word using this saved template document. For an experiment, you can modify NORMAL.dot (the default template document) located in your Users folder; in Application Data – Microsoft – Templates folder. In this way, every time you open or double click WORD.EXE, the Microsoft Word will launch new settings as you have saved before, even the text you typed. You can also open MS Word file extension DOT using Open Office Org 3.0 or Abi Word 2.6.
However, Microsoft Word is not the only one program that use file extension DOT. A file extension DOT is also rarely associated with Corel Draw lines type definition file, Bert’s Dinosaurs file, Graphiz DOT language file, and Ribbons Molecular surface file. Therefore you should recognize the type of DOT file unless you will open it in a wrong program. If none of these programs can open your DOT file, it might be a corrupted DOT file or a registry error in your computer system. If this happens, please run virus scan if there is any virus that potentially damage files and also run registry scan to fix any registry error in your Windows system immediately.
